Cradlepoint MBR1000 Mobile Broadband Router

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

On several dive expeditions I’ve taken, particularly off the coast of Catalina island in Southern California, I’ve had the opportunity to use my Cradlepoint MBR1000 to connect to my work email and to manage the health of my websites.  It is a simple router that I can just use with my Verizon USB 3G modem.  It takes the 3G signal coming off of the nearby cell towers and converts it into a wifi signal that me and my buddies can use.

There are several mobile broadband routers and not all of them are right for everyone.  Some take different types of modems, others work with different cell carriers.  I’d recommend you read this article about the mbr1000.

Get a Cell Signal on your Dive Boat

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

So you’re out in a boat doing a dive, and you start to feel anxiety because you know that if anything goes wrong, you’ll need to call 911, but the cell signal is too weak!  There’s a solution to this problem.

There is a cell phone booster system designed by wilson electronics to help.  It includes a giant outdoor antenna designed to withstand all sorts of weather, a dual band amplifier, and an antenna to broadcast the signal to your phone.

If you’re thinking you want another system that isn’t so powerful, maybe for your home office or your bedroom, you can try a zboost cell phone booster which go for a couple hundred bucks less.
